La enfermedad del hígado graso metabólicamente asociada (MASLD) es una afección relativamente benigna en la que se acumula un exceso de grasa en el hígado de personas que consumen poco o nada de alcohol. La esteatohepatitis asociada a disfunción metabólica (EHAM) es una forma más avanzada y potencialmente grave de EHAM. En esta enfermedad, el hígado no sólo acumula grasa, sino que también se produce inflamación y daño hepatocelular (hepatitis). Nunca se insistirá lo suficiente en la importancia de los problemas MASLD y MASH. El MASH afecta a alrededor del 25% de la población y está estrechamente relacionado con el síndrome metabólico, la obesidad, la diabetes, la dislipidemia y la hipertensión. Es un factor de riesgo de insuficiencia cardiaca y patologías hepáticas como la cirrosis y el carcinoma hepatocelular (CHC). La prevalencia del MASH está aumentando, exacerbada por factores como la obesidad, el envejecimiento de la población e incluso su aparición en niños y adolescentes. Así pues, identificar los factores que facilitan la transición de MASLD a MASH podría ayudar a prevenir la evolución tórpida de la historia natural de la enfermedad.

Buscamos un becario postdoctoral senior altamente motivado para unirse a los grupos del Profesor Antonio Vidal-Puig (I-81) en el Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe. Este papel incluirá dos tareas principales: a) gestión del laboratorio y b) contribución a nuestra investigación que se centra en la identificación de factores que facilitan la transición de MASLD a MASH que podrían ayudar a prevenir la evolución tórpida de la historia natural de la enfermedad.

Metabolically Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MASLD) is a relatively benign condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver of individuals who consume little or no alcohol. MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) is a more advanced and potentially severe form of MASLD. In this condition, not only does the liver accumulate fat, but there is also inflammation and liver cell damage (hepatitis). The importance of MASLD and MASH problems cannot be overstated. MASH affects around 25% of the population and is strongly linked to metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and hypertension. It is a risk factor for heart failure and liver pathologies such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The prevalence of MASH is increasing, exacerbated by factors like obesity, ageing populations, and even its emergence in children and adolescents. Thus, identifying factors that facilitate the transition from MASLD to MASH might help to prevent the torpid evolution of the natural history of the disease.

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Postdoctoral fellow to join Professor Antonio Vidal-Puig’s (I-81) at Centro de Investigacion Principe Felipe. This role will include two main tasks: a) lab management and b) contribution to our research that focuses on identifying factors that facilitate the transition from MASLD to MASH that might help to prevent the torpid evolution of the natural history of the disease.
